BMP (bitmap) is an old Windows format that stores pixels uncompressed. It opens in virtually every program, including very old software and some hardware devices, but files are very large.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or text. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG or WebP.
