About this tool
Converting JPG to PNG gives you a lossless copy that won't lose more quality if you edit and save it again. Note that the file will usually be larger — PNG doesn't make an existing JPG look any sharper.
JPG (JPEG) is the universal photo format: every phone, computer, browser and app can open it. It uses lossy compression, which keeps photos small, but it has no transparency.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or text. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG or WebP.
PNG is lossless, so there's no quality setting — every pixel of the JPG is kept.

Will converting JPG to PNG reduce quality?

What happens to the photo's metadata (EXIF, GPS location)?
The new file is encoded from the image pixels only, so camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied over. The photo is rotated correctly before that, so it won't come out sideways.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, which also makes it fast — there is no upload or download wait.
