About this tool
Converting JPG to WebP makes photos noticeably smaller at the same visual quality, which speeds up websites and helps page-speed scores.
JPG (JPEG) is the universal photo format: every phone, computer, browser and app can open it. It uses lossy compression, which keeps photos small, but it has no transparency.
WebP is a modern format from Google. Google's own comparison found lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, and WebP also supports transparency. All current browsers display it, though some older desktop apps don't open it.
The quality slider controls the WebP compression: 80–90 keeps the image visually identical, lower values make smaller files.

Will converting JPG to WebP reduce quality?
WebP is a lossy format, but at quality 80–90 the difference isn't visible. Use a higher setting if you plan to edit the image further.
What happens to the photo's metadata (EXIF, GPS location)?
The new file is encoded from the image pixels only, so camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied over. The photo is rotated correctly before that, so it won't come out sideways.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, which also makes it fast — there is no upload or download wait.
