About this tool
JPG (JPEG) is the universal photo format: every phone, computer, browser and app can open it. It uses lossy compression, which keeps photos small, but it has no transparency.
Photos saved by phones and cameras are usually encoded at very high quality, so they carry far more data than a screen can show. Re-encoding them with MozJPEG — an encoder tuned for smaller JPEGs at the same visual quality — typically cuts the size by more than half.
The result is still a normal JPG that opens everywhere. If the image will only be used on the web, converting to WebP saves even more.
Frequently asked questions
What quality should I use for JPG?
75 is a good default for the web. Use 85–90 for photos you may print or edit later, and 50–65 when size matters most, such as email attachments.
Can I compress several JPGs at once?
Yes. Drop or select as many files as you like; each one is compressed with the same settings and you can download them individually or as a ZIP.
What happens to the photo's metadata (EXIF, GPS location)?
The new file is encoded from the image pixels only, so camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied over. The photo is rotated correctly before that, so it won't come out sideways.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, which also makes it fast — there is no upload or download wait.
