About this tool

Converting GIF to PNG gives a lossless image that keeps transparency and is better supported by editors. Animated GIFs are converted from their first frame.

GIF is one of the oldest web image formats. It stores at most 256 colours and supports simple on/off transparency, which suits logos, icons and simple graphics but makes photos look grainy.

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or text. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG or WebP.

PNG is lossless, so there's no quality setting — every pixel of the GIF is kept.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert multiple GIF files to PNG at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many GIF files as you like; each is converted to PNG and you can download them individually or all together as a ZIP.

Will converting GIF to PNG reduce quality?

No further quality is lost — PNG stores the image losslessly.

What happens to the photo's metadata (EXIF, GPS location)?

The new file is encoded from the image pixels only, so camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied over. The photo is rotated correctly before that, so it won't come out sideways.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, which also makes it fast — there is no upload or download wait.
