About this tool
Converting JPG to GIF is useful for platforms and older tools that only accept GIF images.
JPG (JPEG) is the universal photo format: every phone, computer, browser and app can open it. It uses lossy compression, which keeps photos small, but it has no transparency.
GIF is one of the oldest web image formats. It stores at most 256 colours and supports simple on/off transparency, which suits logos, icons and simple graphics but makes photos look grainy.
GIF can hold only 256 colours, so the tool picks the best 256-colour palette for each image. Graphics usually look identical; photos with smooth gradients may show some banding. Animated GIFs are converted from their first frame.

Will the image look the same as a GIF?
Logos, icons and flat graphics usually look identical. Photos are reduced to 256 colours, which can cause visible banding in skies and gradients — PNG or WebP are better choices for photos.
What happens to the photo's metadata (EXIF, GPS location)?
The new file is encoded from the image pixels only, so camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied over. The photo is rotated correctly before that, so it won't come out sideways.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, which also makes it fast — there is no upload or download wait.
